Work on the design for the Red Villa was started by Josef Gočár in 1907, while he was still a member of Jan Kotěra’s Prague atelier. The house was the spacious residence of Josef Binko, the co-owner of the Krucemburk tannery, a leading exponent of Czech Secessionist photography, and Gočár’s later father-in-law. The young architect decided to conceive his first independently realised building as a type of English rural villa set among greenery. Today, the villa is occupied by descendents of Josef Binko.
